I am wanting to cast a critical gaze on the intersection of racism and sexism, and how they influence one another. Prison is used as a metaphor of racism, and closet as a metaphor of heterosexism. The juxtaposition of black bodies crammed into an overcrowded jail cell next to the image of a lone closeted space, is meant to evoke a sense of how our minds, bodies and souls have been ravaged by both oppressions of racism and heterosexism. The topic of mass incarceration, the policing of black bodies, black sexuality, and queerness are more deeply interrogated and discussed.
